Break the throwaway bag habit: invest in reusable bags, refuse a bag, reuse a bag. Buy reusable items: cloth napkins, batteries, lunch boxes Buy items with recycled content: paper, aluminum, glass Buy in bulk Look for items that use minimal packaging and use post consumer recycled content in their packaging. Use crushed newspaper, egg cartons, or air-popped corn (unbuttered) to cushion items for shipping. Use chemicals that are environmentally friendly. Some eco-friendly household cleaners include: Vinegar (1 part vinegar to 1 part water)to replace products for cleaning glass and surfaces. Lemon Juice to dissolve hard water and soap scum, Baking Soda to deodorize and clean when an abrasive is needed, Hydrogen peroxide can be used as a stain remover instead of chlorine bleach. Test surface first to be sure product does no harm and do not mix products such as vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Use pest control methods that are least toxic and services that offer integrated pest management. Use soaps, oils, microbials, and biologicals on as needed basis. When harsher chemicals are needed, use those labeled 'caution' rather than 'danger'.
