Summary:

Details

What a terrific and energizing meeting. Following are the minutes appended to the agenda. Please note the action items. Also, since there was so much interest in perhaps getting a dedicated youth leader, let's ask Stephen to look into it for us so we can discuss it in more detail on November 3rd. Thank you all! Holly

Sunday School - Patricia Wood

We have terrific teachers and we have a new curriculum. Everyone is arriving prepared, and yet we don't have very many students. As a matter of fact, Jeremy had no one to teach this past Sunday (9-24). Stephen has suggested that we plan an event inviting the parents of prospective Sunday School students and telling them about our wonderful curriculum in hopes they will see the value in bringing their children to join us. I have attached an attendance sheet for review and update by the teachers.

>Invite to Sunday School in MNN

Patricia suggested that we write an invitation to be placed in the Mountain Network News that invites the community to bring their children to our church school that is rooted in a Judeo Christian tradition and inclusive of other faith values (please correct this, Patricia). If Patricia is able to put something together in time for the MNN 10 October deadline, she can send it to Gina Foster (farmorfoster@yahoo.com) for editing/input, and should send the final product to news@MNN.net.

>Sunday School Web Page In order to get more visibility, excitment about our Sunday School program and to attract a greater attendance, we will create a Sunday School page for the Skyland Church web site. This page will include text content that describes the program and is accompanied by photos and graphics. Del Mahrle will take pictures of our alter banners (the Sunday School ones) and save them as jpegs. We will create kidligraphy of words like Love, Caring, Home, Friends, Peace...as a project for the class to be scanned and added to the page.

>Children's Music Del suggested that we have more music in our Sunday School. This suggestion was greeted with enthusiasm. Del will work with the children for a few minutes each Sunday and prepare a song for them to sing during "words for children" in church. Perhaps we can ask Carol Greene to work with them to prepare something for Advent. T'Shala will work with them on music for Lent/Easter season.

Nursery - T'Shala

T'Shala is sharing Nursery duty with Kelly Leary. How is it going?

>Nursery is going well. Kelly Leary is tending children on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays and T'Shala is working the nursery on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

Youth

High Schoolers - Will Clark and Jeremy Cole

Middle Schoolers - Peggy Johnson and Kim Gautho

>Consider a dedicated leader for Youth, paid part-time Will Clark led a discussion about how to engage the interest of our middle and high-schoolers who just don't seem thrilled by any of our suggestions for activities. We talked about the possibility of budgeting and hiring someone, an intern, young with youth leadership experience. We need to do two things, understand how many youth we have to serve in our current congregation, and how this might attract more youth and their families. Let's ask Stephen to look into the details of how we can find someone, who that person should be, how many hours we'd be talking about, and how much this could cost.

Adult Education - Del Mahrle

Let's talk about the 12 session program that Stephen proposed at the last meeting (August 13) and any other plans.

Events:

Next event is Advent Sunday.

>T'Shala will coordinate Advent Sunday

Christmas Pageant. We need to set a date and determine format in order to be prepared.

Was this discussed?

The next meeting will be Sunday, November 3.

Please correct, add, and make appropriate changes.

Respectfully submitted.

Holly Reed
