EILEEN'S WEBSITE EVALUATION

Eileen presented a summary of her evaluation of five local UCC websites, as part of a class she took on "21 Century Evangelism."

UCC has new commercial (see www.ucc.org) which will be airing this coming Monday. The skylandchurch.com site might get lots more website traffic as a result of the commercial.

Eileen looked at the websites for the following churches:

  • First Congregational Santa Cruz
  • La Salva Beach
  • Skyland Church
  • Almaden Valley
  • Campbell UCC

The most impressive site was Campbell's:

  • calendar up to date
  • photos/message from minister (geared to newcomers
  • link to worship/style/visuals inside church
  • music
  • sermons
  • orders of service
  • link up to different programs

Their site is geared to newcomers: what is the minister like, what is worship style, what's it feel like?, warm/welcoming or stuffy?

Suggestions for skylandchurch.com: could "POP" a little bit more, current version too static. Should add something about nursery. Feature mother's day service, personal news, etc.

While the website is important, we need to extend the welcome to the church experience.

OLD BUSINESS

Bulletin boards:

New bulletin board is church business (flowers/potluck/saltshakers/meetings posted/financial stuff)

Old bulletin board is for non-church business (advertising, newspaper articles, personal news, etc).

Larry: Calendar/Schedule will take full church participation.

No Member Left Behind: need some way to disseminate minutes to non-web-enabled members. For example, for the flower calendar, Dorothy Ellis could notify flower people by phone the week prior.

Larry has a secondary list of people, on committees, will be involved in training.

NEW BUSINESS

John presented a prototype of the new home page. Christina will redesign the site's look and feel in photoshop, at which time John will convert her design to HTML/CSS.

John will have Andy push the new DNS changes in the next two days, which will result in the new server infrastructure going live. This will give us Webalizer statistics, consistent website look, @skylandchurch.com email addresses and aliases.

Email addresses: After the DNS change, the @skylandchurch.com email addresses will be live. We will then have a large number of email aliases available for the various committees and other groups, allowing email to be sent without exposing individual email addresses. The aliases will be automatically updated as committees change, etc.

The membership database project is underway and should be complete in the next few weeks. The calendar project will follow shortly thereafter.

Website priorities over the next few weeks:

1. transfer everything to the new server

2. implement the membership database

3. implement calendar

4. build the new home page with Christina's input

Larry's comment: Website will be our administrative assistant.

New business for next meeting: Larry raised the question on who should own what functions.

Next meeting TBD
