Details

Minutes of the Skyland Board of Education meeting of Sunday, March 5, 2006

Note to all board members: We will be asked to submit a budget to the trustees very soon. Please consult with your counterpart from last year. Review your plans and costs. We can discuss in detail on April 2 and add it all up. Do not hesitate to call if you have questions.

Youth Training Event Report: Will, Jeremy, and Eileen came with much enthusiasm over the UCC regional event they attended in Fremont on Saturday, March 4. The event was extremely worthwhile and they connected with youth leaders from many UCC churches including, especially, those from Santa Cruz. There were recommendations for attendance to UCC camps for all ages. The overall message for UCC is "Social Justice."

Save the date: There will be a retreat & training at Camp Cazadero (Russian River) August 18-20, 2006. See details at www.ncncucc.org or talk to Eileen Altman. (Eileen, I couldn't find any information about this event on the site. Do you have more specifics that I may have missed? Thx,)

Youth Group: Sarah DeFalla's report was submitted by Eileen Altman. March 19 Youth Group will go to City of Refuge UCC in San Francisco, planning to leave from the church at 10:30 AM for the service that begins at 1PM and ends?? Middle and high school youth are invited to attend. Will Clark will be taking any youth from Skyland who are interested to a UCC Fundraising Dance in Berkeley on Saturday, March 25 from 7-11PM.

Will wants to set up a once-a-month visit to the Santa Cruz high school-age youth group meeting that occurs every Sunday. Their middle school group meets during church meetings so joint meetings with them would not be easy. We would also like to host joint meetings, camp out/barbecue at our church.

We have 5-6 regular attendees of our Youth Group meetings but closer to 20 eligible youth in the church membership. We need a leader for the middle school group. Kim Gautho has expressed an interest but is seeking support or a partner to help.

Easter: (April 16) youth group will coordinates the appearance of the Easter bunny along with the goodies to supply her/him. Sarah, it sounds like you can count on Jeremy and/or Will to help. Make sure to let us know if you need someone to buy the eggs/goodies for hiding AND make sure to submit receipts for reimbursement. This is in the budget.

Mothers' Day: (May 10) Youth Group will coordinate a Mothers Day event again this year. There was a suggestion of a pancake breakfast on Mother's Day as well. (is someone looking into this?)

Janis Smith suggested that people think on one sentence that best describes what they like best about their mother. Someone else (Will?) suggested that everyone be asked to bring in a photo of their mother along with a sentence or paragraph describing something special about her to be pinned up on the long wall in Whitaker Hall. Janet Davies suggested a Skyland Mothers' Cookbook, bring a picture of your MOM and a favorite recipe of hers. Janet will compile the book and it can be sold at Harvest Festival.

Anything we plan should go in the April newsletter

Church School Superintendent: Patricia Wood - There will be a teacher training after church on Sunday, March 12.

Patricia is recruiting for a replacement for T'Shala to teach the 4th Sundays of each month (did someone raise their hand at the meeting?).

Nursery: T'Shala is recruiting for a replacement for Laura Benson in the Nursery.

Adult Education: see minutes from February 19.

Children's Sunday: (June 11th) see minutes from February 19.

Summer Program Coordinator: see minutes from February 19.

4th of July: see minutes from February 19

FOR COUNCIL:

UCC Conference May 18-20, 2006 in Asilomar is seeking a youth delegate from each church (will vote)

Mountain Faith Community Picnic? Radonich? this summer?

defribrulator purchase or allow emergency response teams to keep one at the church, no church responsibility but it would be a community service

NEXT MEETING: Sunday, April 2, 2006, after church

Respectfully submitted,

Holly Reed
