Stephen opened with a prayer.
CHURCH INTERNS - Stephen requested that the internship item under New Business be discussed first. He expressed a desire for the deacons to formulate a policy regarding interns. The question is whether or not interns should come from within the congregation. His concern is that switching from lay person to intern and back to lay person creates role confusion. Pam, who has been an intern and is now a member of the congregation, agreed that there could be a potential problem.
Ruth brought up the issue of 4-way covenants. Our church is involved in several such covenants. She spoke as a member of the credentials committee of the Northern Calif. Conference of the UCC. She expressed a concern that these do not always work as well as they might, and would like the deacons to consider this in their discussion.
It was decided that the deacons would table the discussion about 4-way covenants until a later time and concentrate on ministers-in-training.
Discussion followed regarding the role of lay members, interns and the minister. Carolyn brought up the necessity for clear boundaries between various roles. An intern’s relationship to his/her supervisor vs. his/her pastor was mentioned as being two quite different relationships.
It was MSP that we encourage members of our congregation who wish to pursue a ministerial internship to do so at another church. As deacons, we wish to be supportive in the process of finding a site for such training. (Moved by Larry C., Seconded by Pam N.)
Richard offered to write up the differences between a “home? church and a “training? church.
PEW CARDS – Larry C. and Richard will work with Nancy Jo on this. Nancy Jo shared some preliminary artwork for the project.
COMMUNION JUICE – Nancy Jo brought some non-alcoholic grape juice to taste and possibly use for communion.
Respectfully submitted, Jennifer Busam
