Minutes for Religious Education CommitteeMeeting date: 2006-02-19 Next meeting: 2006-03-05 These minutes have been approved. No further changes to these minutes will be permitted. Submitted by: Holly Reed Attendees:
Summary: Details T'Shala thanked everyone for their service over the past year and welcomed new members Will Clark, Jeremy Cole, Janet Davies, and Janis Smith. T'Shala asked for a motion to elect Holly Reed as chair for 2006, moved, seconded, and approved.
Holly took over the meeting and thanked T'Shala for her work as chair and superintendent. Youth Group was originally on the agenda for the meeting but was moved to March 5th at which time Melissa Eisner will join us along with Eileen. Instead, we covered all of the roles of the Board of Education and sought volunteers to coordinate events and manage responsibilities.
We will plan to meet once a month during the school year. Meetings will be held, unless otherwise notified, on the first Sunday of each month, after church, September through June.
Church School Superintendent: Patricia Wood - The last day Church School will be Sunday, June 4th. The first day of fall session will be mid-September, 2006. Particia has the curriculum for March 1 through Easter. Teachers can copy the sections that cover their Sundays to be prepared.
Teachers: Holly Reed - 1st Sundays, Kristin Pratt - 2nd Sundays, Linda Heyes - 3rd Sundays, T'Shala Olivieri - 4th Sundays, Del Mahrle - 5th Sundays. Peggy Johnson and Sherrie Starkie are substitutes.
Nursery: T'Shala Olivieri will continue coordinating the Nursery supervisor. T'Shala will track hours with Laura and make sure she is paid in a timely fashion. Laura Benson, our Nursery Supervisor, is a senior this year and, if we are lucky, we will have her through the summer. T'Shala will talk to Laura about her continued availability and begin recruiting well in advance of Laura's last Sunday.
Youth Group: Sarah DeFalla is currently leading the youth group. Will Clark will take on board responsibility for the Youth Group, reporting to the board, working to assist Sarah, and teaming with others to recruit more youth and encourage youth members to select and implement their own programs. Will, Eileen, and Jeremy will be attending an event in Fremont on March 4th and bring what they learn to the next meeting, March 5.
Adult Education: Del Mahrle will coordinate an Adult Education programs and has lots of ideas. We will assist in every way we can.
Easter: (April 16) Board of Education and Youth Group coordinates the appearance of the Easter bunny along with the goodies to supply her/him
Mothers' Day: (May 10) Youth Group will coordinat a Mothers Day again event this year. Janis Smith also suggested that people think of one sentence that best describes what they like best about their mother. Someone else (Will?) suggested that everyone be asked to bring in a photo of their mother along with a sentence or paragraph describing something special about her to be pinned up on the long wall in Whitaker Hall. Janet Davies suggested a Skyland Mothers' Cookbook, bring a picture of your MOM and a favorite recipe of hers. Janet will compile the book and it can be sold at Harvest Festival. It sounds like we would like to do ALL of the above, but need to get more specific at the next meeting.
Children's Sunday: (June 11th) Deacons are responsible for Teacher Recognition on this Sunday. Patricia will provide teacher names to the Deacons. The Superintendent is responsible for recognizing all of the children, presenting a certificate to each one. Sarah has a "soft copy" of the certificate content which should be forwarded to Patricia. Stephen presents Bibles to 4th graders. Patricia will provide a list of 4th graders to Stephen for this purpose.
Summer Program Coordinator: Peggy Johnson will coordinate sign-up of instructors for the children's summer Sunday programs. Del Mahrle will cover coordinating the first three summer Sundays because Peggy and her family will be vacationing right after school closes.
4th of July: (July 2nd) Will Clark and Jeremy Cole will coordinate the 4th of July event this year. Deacons bring ice cream and toppings for dessert. Jeremy wants to make sure that the entire community is aware of this celebration (an article for MNN? deadline is June 10, plus something in the June newsletter).
Advent Sunday Family Activities: (Dec. 3) Janet Davies will be the coordinator with Holly Reed assisting
Christmas Pageant: We decided to table discussions of the pageant format, date, etc. for now and will re-visit at a later meeting in the early fall.
Additional Activity: Janet Davies suggested that we make a children/youth project out of livening up our sign at the church and out on Old San Jose-Soquel Road.
Jeremy Cole will act as our liaison to the Deacons for questions regarding ritual, order of the service, family Sundays, 4th of July desserts, etc.
NEXT MEETING: Sunday, March 5, 2006, after church
