Summary: Skyland Run distribution of monies, Bread for the World Nov. 22, Migrant Worker's Toiletries Kits

Details

The meeting began at the Lopp’s house with an informal discussion with Betsy Fullagar about In African Shoes, a non-profit that she created to help the village of Boxahuku. South Africa. She described all the work that has been done in such a short time. Most notably, the construction of a learning center, complete with 6,000 books! The Mission Board looked at her photos and discussed some of the most urgent needs in education in Boxhuku. We decided that further discussion was necessary and that Betsy would ask for our help in collecting more children’s books and packing them for shipment to Africa in early 2010.

Old Business

Anne gave a brief report on the 2009 Skyland Run and the final amount of money to be distributed. With all sponsorship money coming in, it is $5650. Then began a discussion about the selection and distribution of the funds. Stephen reminded us that we could change any amount that we gave. So we looked over the 2008 distribution to see if we wanted to make any changes. With some of the organizations we decided to do further research. Jan Parker had a great idea to write a draft of a letter to the organizations requesting information as to how they used the funds that we give them. Jan said that she would communicate with Gerry Alonzo about including such a letter when the funds are sent.

New Business

Anne spoke briefly about the offering of letters for Bread for the World with perhaps the Sunday before Thanksgiving being an appropriate time to write letters regarding hunger.

Stephen said that he would give a sermon on hunger and we decided that Nov. 22 would work. Anne will write a newsletter article about world hunger and the offering of letters.

We began planning for the Migrant worker’s toiletries collection. Nancy Jo said that she would be responsible for creating the hand-out list and the basket for collecting the toiletries.Stephen will speak with Janet Davies to do Words for the Children to kick off the drive that will end on Dec. 6th. Nancy Jo will write a newsletter article.
