New Member Sunday was set for 6/21/09 with orientation on 6/14/09.

D. Law gave a status report on the Memorial Area. Stephen commented on the need to have congregational approval before any firm commitments are made beyond design.

Plans for Harvest Festival were discussed. Marcia described her ideas for the Welcome Booth, including displays illustrating the activities of several of the church committees. (To be discussed at Council) This year the computer demo and perhaps a photo projection display will be moved inside to provide better viewing. It was decided to order 150 shopping bags for decoration and distribution.

Stephen mentioned that Tom Kugler had already moved to Santa Rosa so we will alter our plans for a farewell service. When he gets established in his new job we expect to end his four-way covenant with Skyland as he will probably enter a similar covenant with his new church family.

Stephen mentioned that we have been invited to join with 1st Church San Jose to participate in a Gay Pride activity in June. The Deacons agreed to provide brochures, which can be included in their display booth, but we did not offer to share financial expenses.

Two suggestions were presented in the interest of preserving the spirit of worship during the Sunday service.

1. The Deacons considered possible alternatives to the current practice of passing sign-up sheets around the congregation during the church service, One very workable solution was to have a card table on the porch so that people could stop and sign up on their way out of church.

2. It was suggested that we try to encourage members to refrain from talking unnecessarily during the communion service. Stephen said that he will work it into the instructions for communion and during the May 17th children’s sermon.

The meeting was adjourned with prayer at 1:45 PM.
