Summary: Skyland Run discusssion, the African Library Project Book Drives, Crop Walk, UCC Conference Virtual 100K Run/fundraiser

Details

The Mission Board held an informal discussion about the Skyland Run over dinner. The Skyland Run will be on July 11,2009 and Terry Leary is the chair of the 2009 Run.

Some new ideas were suggested as we all agreed that we would support the Skyland Run in any way that we could. Marketing ideas revolved around new signage and banners, and Jan suggested notifying the schools/track teams before they let out in mid-June.We decided to invite the Skyland Run committee to our next meeting to better understand their needs.

Old Business

Anne reported on the African Library Project’s Lesotho Book Drive that we shipped in February. Over 1,600 books were shipped to St. Stephen’s School, Lesotho at a total cost of $701. We are also gathering letters, bookmarks that Jan Parker’s kindergarten class made, postcards from Angela and photos of us packing books. Some of these will go to St. Stephen’s School and some will go with our Botswana Book Drive. We have also made plans with Kacie Clark to pack and ship the two Botswana book drives at the same time.

On March 22nd, the Mission Board and friends will sort and pack, make boxes, weigh them and count the books for the Mmakagori Book Drive and the Omaweneno Book Drive. On April 5th, all the boxes will be labeled and the African Library Project paperwork will be completed. Sometime the week of April 6-10, we will mail the boxes to New Orleans and from there they will be shipped by container to Africa.

We then discussed Julia Swayne’s trip to Botswana at the end of March- June 20th. We discussed the educational games that she will take with her.

New Business

Jan will write newsletter articles for the Crop Walk which is on April 26th and Stephen will mention it during the service.

UCC Conference has requested that each congregation join in a fundraiser to justly compensate our conference staff. After much discussion about the economy and how to prioritize needs, it was decided that we would not have the One Great Hour of Sharing at Easter but rather do this fundraiser on March 22nd when Stephen would expand on the needs of the conference staff during the sermon and the connections that the UCC churches have with one another.
