Minutes for Missions CommitteeMeeting date: 2008-11-10 Next meeting: 2009-01-12 These minutes have been approved. No further changes to these minutes will be permitted. Submitted by: Jackie Seymour Attendees:
Summary: Discussion of needs of Loma Prieta Fire victums, Julia's upcoming trip to Africa, packing and weighing boxes for ALP, distribution of race funds and special offering for VCU Details After a wonderful dinner provided by Anne at her home, the meeting was called to order. Stephen led us in prayer.
Stephen told us that Valley Churches United were in need of food and the deacons had requested a special offering.
Larry Lopp told us about those affected by the Loma Prieta fires this summer and were in need of food and other things. Larry has 4 ½ cords of fire wood available to them and to others in the mountains in need. It was suggested that Larry put together a list of specific needs of the fire victims with which the church might be able to help them and bring it before the council.
Julia Swayne discussed her proposed trip to Africa in February to help set up the library that the church is sending through ALP. She has air-fare but will need help with additional funding for her stay there. We discussed ways that she might be able to raise awareness and funding for her trip, such as gift wrapping packages for donations, talking to the various community organizations for sponsorship, having a pancake breakfast etc.
Minutes for the meeting on 9-15-08 were read and approved.
African Library Project Book Drive – Many thanks to Angela Patterson and Bill Colbran for the outstanding job of collecting books for the libraries. Also the board wishes to thank Julia Swayne for all her hard work in gathering books at the church. We have enough books and money for two libraries.
We need to start collecting boxes (~10?X12?X13?) for a cheaper mailing rate. We can’t ship the boxes until Dec. 1st. Anne will organize us to start packing and weighing boxes of books.
There are forms to be filled out for each box. If Anne can send a copy of the form to Jackie she can put it on the computer and expedite the “filling-out? process.
Migrant Workers Kits – Janet Davies has agreed to take the kits to Davenport. Jackie will put out the baskets to collect items and make announcements in church.
Skyland Run Money Disbursment -- total is $6051.14. The New Horizon School is no longer open. We agreed to increase funding to the Rebele Family Shelter, and to the Loma Prieta Fire Department. Angela suggested contributing to a local group – Parents Helping Parents and we agreed to add a contribution to that group. Angela will write a newsletter article on the group for the January or February newsletter. The article can then be adapted for the giving booklet.
Blanket Sunday – Dec. 14th. Stephen will write a newsletter article.
We will consider a special offering for Valley Churches United in Jan or Feb. Further discussion will take place at the next meeting.
Next meeting will be Monday Jan12th.
