Minutes of Deacon's Meeting for November 9, 2008

Present: Marcia Rollins, Don Law, Richard Lyness, Julie Victorine, Larry Cooke, Ruth Dawkins, and Stephen Glauz-Todrank

The meeting was called to order by Marcia

The October minutes were reviewed and approved.

Assignment of Duties:

Coffee for services in December, January, and February was discussed since traditionally Deacons have provided them. The desirability of involving non-committee members was mentioned. Those present agreed to the assignments as follows:

Coffee: 12/7 – Jennifer and Marcia;

12/14 –Richard and Ruth;

12/28 – Glenda and Larry;

1 / 4 – Don;

Stephen then led us in an opening prayer.

Old Business

Planning is continuing on a Memorial Walkway.

Ideas for Deacons response to economic changes in the community were discussed. Larry suggested setting up a source for free heating wood and increasing gifts to our food pantry. We also recommended the Mission Committee do a special offering for Valley Churches United Food Bank.

Everyone felt the Deacons potluck was good, but there were difficulties getting people to eat at their deacon' table. Either people didn't understand or they just wanted to eat with someone else that day. We discussed whether we should continue this celebration, but no decision was reached.

Stephen will do an update of membership rolls.

New Business

Don Law stressed the need to set a new members Sunday and stick to it. It was agreed to set 12/14 as the new member Sunday and to meet with the prospective new membe3rs at the next Deacons meeting on 12/9 at 7pm at the Church.

We had a long discussion of the new order of service used that day by Stephen. Stephen thanked us for the suggestions and critique we provided and will give further consideration to the ideas expressed this week.

Larry agreed to work on a Salt Shakers program for January through April.

Next meeting is on Tuesday 12/9 at 7pm at the Church.
