Minutes for Missions CommitteeMeeting date: 2008-04-21 Next meeting: 2008-05-19 These minutes have not yet been approved. Submitted by: Jackie Seymour Attendees:
Summary: Several upcoming projects were discussed -- African Library Project, Crop Walk, Bread for the World, Mountain clean-up, and our participation in Skyland Run. Assignments were made for newsletter write up. Details The Mission Board meeting was held in the home of Anne Evans and was called to order at about 6PM.
Jan Parker graciously supplied dinner for us, keeping up our traditions of having fantastic food to supply the energy needed to do our hard work. Nancy Jo treated us to ice cream cones -- delicious!!
Anne supplied the thought for the day which was a dvd of a teacher, Me Theresa, whom she met in Losotho. With so little in the way of resources, Me Theresa was able to not only teach the children but be an advocate for them and give them assistance very inspiring, especially when we think we are doing SO much.
Anne informed us that no one in the church would be able to join Dr. Amman in Liberia this year.
We briefly discussed the accumulation of the heifer project quarters. Though the money is coming in slowly, it is increasing. We decided to leave the Heifer tube as is.
A further refinement of the recycle sign has been done and a bigger container supplied. Nancy Jo will Inform Gina Whetherill.
African Library Project -- the youth group seem interested in helping with it. Anne will show her finished DVD on May 18th at the after-church social hour pot luck. We will have the Book Drive in October, after Harvest Festival utilizing the some of the useful children's books left over from Harvest Festival. That will give us the summer to collect books and distribute information about the drive. We might consider contacting other churches to collect books as well. Anne will write a newsletter article on the book drive.
Coffee hour didn't work so well with one person, especially if the one person has to do it alone, without the assistance of their spouse.
Crop Walk will be on April 27th. Jan and Stephen will do the walk, Stephen will pass out the collection envelope on the two Sundays before.
We will include a Mountain Cleanup Project in the fall. Summit Road still looks pretty good from the last cleanup effort.
Mountain Run is scheduled for July 12th. Paula Leary will meet with us on May 19th to discuss ways we can help her.
We will do Bread for the World on June 15th, which is a pot luck Sunday. We thought that we might do sandwiches/and other finger foods. Jackie will write a news letter article for June. Details to be mapped out at the May meeting.
Joan Law wanted us to see about setting up a foundation for the India Students so the money would be able to be dispersed without depending on a single person such as Anadon. We will discuss this at future meetings.
Anne reported on the council meeting. Minutes for last meeting were approved.
Our next meeting will take place again at Anne Evans home, on May 19th at 6PM. Someone will supply food but I don't remember who that might be... Edit | Back |
