Minutes for Religious Education CommitteeMeeting date: 2007-09-09 Next meeting: 2007-09-30 These minutes have been approved. No further changes to these minutes will be permitted. Submitted by: Holly Reed Attendees:
Summary: We are putting Sunday School back in place after the remodel making room for Harvest Festival Books.Nursery attendants are being recruited. Youth is off to a great start and will be working Toys at Harvest Festival. Details Sunday, September 9 Attending: Stephen Glauz-Todrank, Holly Reed, Patricia Wood, Kim Cunningham, Larry Lopp, Mary Ellen McTamaney, Pam Nates, Jeremy Cole
Remodel: Mary Ellen and Larry talked about remodeling plans and schedules for the Sunday School and Nursery. Painting and flooring will be completed at which point Sunday School will be set up again and cabinets cleaned out. Tables for the books section will be there until after Harvest Festival. Action: All who can come will meet 9am Sunday the 16th to set up the Sunday School area, hang the banners for the altar, clean the closet.
Nursery: Steve will discuss nursery attendant duties in words for children on the 17th. Also there will be an exercise to promote every adult knowing each child by name and each child knowing the adults in our community. This is part of helping the children to know they are loved and have a home here.
The hope is that we can have 4-5 Nursery Attendants who will take turns greeting parents with small children who may need nursery care as they enter the church. Then they will go down to the Nursery when the children are sent down to Sunday School. Since there are seldom infants in church, this seems to be the only solution that does not involve hiring and paying someone to sit in and empty nursery Sunday after Sunday.
Pam Nates and Kim Cunningham have volunteered.
Sunday School: The new curriculum has been used twice now and is well received. Carol Green has a new song and is helping start each Sunday School session with singing. Patricia plans to expand the curriculum and will send out updated versions when she is done.
Youth: Kim Gautho reports the following via email: My plan for this year is to give our youth fun opportunities to be together with kids from their community (especially important as they transition to the high school and lose track of CT friends) and to provide opportunities to earn community service hours.
With these goals in mind, we will be holding a meeting to plan our calendar of events for the year. When: next Sunday, September 16th at appx. 10:45 AM (kids will be excused from church service which starts at 10:30), and I will provide breakfast!! Where: Whittaker hall, Skyland Church If you can't make the meeting but your kids have suggestions for fun or service activities this year, feel free to email me your ideas by next Sunday. Also, if anyone's kids would like to come but don't have a ride to church, let me know and i'll help provide one.
Upcoming Community Service Opportunities: -Saturday, Sept. 15th: the RBE (religious board of education) is looking for volunteers to help move Sunday School back into their newly remodeled location. Show up at Whittaker Hall around 9 AM to help- I'll have a sign-in sheet to track hours worked. (Should take no more than 2-3 hours)
-Saturday, Sept. 22: annual Skyland Church Harvest festival. Many volunteer opportunities available, from booth setup or cleanup, working a booth during the festival, helping with food service, etc. Note that all proceeds from the toy booth fund youth group activities.
Adult Education: Our Greening of the Church program is being led by Jackie Seymour.
Advent Sunday: Holly will lead Advent Sunday Activities with assistance from Pam, Jeremy and the Youth.
Next Meeting is Sunday, September 30th. (Holly is away Oct. 6-21)
