The meeting was called to order by Richard at 7:35 p.m.

Stephen began with a prayer, after which a motion was made to approve the August Minutes, which passed.

Discussion with Patricia Wood

Patricia told the Deacons about being approved for In-Care status. One of a number of suggestions from her in-care review included more activities regarding the bible. As a result Patricia wanted to conduct a series of bible study meetings. After some discussion we agreed on three meetings after church on three consecutive Sundays 10/7,10/14, and 10/21. Richard agreed to help her with the Newsletter and coordination. Patricia also gave us a copy of the UCC In-Care Manual on Ministry. Part of our obligation to Patricia is to provide a support group. We agreed to discuss the exact participants of that group in another meeting, after Patricia had a chance to think about who she would like to have in the group.

Patricia also offered to get a Minister’s pulpit stole for Ilene, for her ordination present from us. We agreed to pay for it, suggesting a green one. Stephen agreed to bless it and Eileen’s ministry on Sunday 10/21 before her ordination that afternoon.

Assignment of Duties:

Stephen mentioned Streeter will preach on 10/14, and he will determine whether T’shala and/or Patricia will fill in on 10/7, while he is away. We then proceeded to assign next month’s duties as follows:

Welcoming New Intern, Moira O’Deady

Stephen will meet with Moira on 9/10, and will introduce her to the Congregations on Sunday 9/16 during the service. The deacons also established a teaching committee, comprised of David Cooke, Don Law, and Ruth Dawkins (should she agree). Don agreed to participate in the training on 9/23 at the Pacific School of Religion. The group will later be expanded to include 1-3 other church members as Moira makes connections with members of our church.

Mentor of Marina UCC Congregation

The Deacons agreed to ask Ruth and Julie, who were not present, if they would be interested in leading the efforts to mentor the Marina Congregation, pending approval from the Council this month.

New Member Sunday

We reviewed the New Member Sunday scheduled for October 28th, and determined that New Member Orientation, previously scheduled for Sunday October 21st would be difficult, because of everything else going on (Eileen’s ordination, Patricia’s bible study, etc.), so we changed the orientation to Thursday evening at 7:30pm on October 25th at the church. We also agreed to reassign the responsibilities at the next meeting.

Other Business:

Stephen suggested we take a Sunday to recognize all the ministers and interns in our Congregation. We agreed to combine this with a Deacon’s Sunday, to be held on Sunday 11/18. The Deacons will all call their assigned members, bring food and sit with their members and an intern or minister and their members. That Sunday Stephen will recognize all the service all our ministers have performed, and we will recognize them again at the pot-luck after the service.

We briefly continued our discussion about the membership policy, recognizing the need for ongoing communication with our church members, and acknowledging that some improvement has been made in talking with visitors and new members. We again agreed to continue the discussion at the next meeting.

The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 30th after Church. Richard, who will not be able to attend, agreed to coordinate with Jennifer, who will lead the meeting.
