Summary: The Deacons selected their fall intern from 3 excellent candidates, deferred the New Member Sunday until July, and approved the Membership categories the proposed Membership policy along with its normal housekeeping duties.

The meeting was called to order by Richard at 7:35 p.m.

Stephen opened with a prayer.

All reviewed the Minutes for 4/3/2007, which were then approved

2007/2008 Intern Recruitment.

Richard began the meeting by announcing that three candidates had been interviewed by four Deacons, which after two separate discussions finally chose one candidate, but it was a close decision between two of them. After some discussion a motion was made and passed to have Stephen contact each of the candidates in order of preference. If telling each, after the first to accept the internship, that the position was filled.

Later Stephen called the first, who declined, and then called the second who accepted. Our new intern will be Moira O’Deady. She is young, 23 years old, starting her second year at the Pacific School of Religion, after receiving her B.A. in Literature from UCSC. She is a member of Foothills Congregational Church in Los Altos, and has been active in the camping program of the NCNC. The Deacons are looking forward to introducing her to the congregation in the fall.

Assignment of Duties:

Stephen mentioned he plans to be at Asilomar on the 18th -19th for the NCN conference annual meeting. He will also be out on Sunday the 27th. After trying to get an outside minister to preach on the 27th, Stephen said it was too short notice to get anyone from the outside, and all the other ministers in the church wouldn’t be available, so Larry offered to give the sermon. The rest of the month signed up as follows:

Jennifer also agreed to get the flowers for the Choir Sunday on 6/3 and Children/Teachers Sunday on 6/10.

Member/Community Issues/Concerns

Stephen said he could think of only one member who could perhaps use a card from us. Richard agreed to follow up.

New Member Sunday

As of this meeting there were 8 individuals who expressed an interest in becoming new members. We had originally suggested the 20th for New Member Sunday, but it is too busy, and will be too busy until July, so Stephen suggested and the Deacons agreed to move the New Member Sunday to 7/22, and to have orientation for the new members on 7/15 (the day after the Run).

Other Business

Initially we agreed to once again postpone the discussion on the Deacons’ Membership Policy which Stephen had presented back in March. We were about to end the meeting when Don suggested we at least begin the process now. After some discussion, we agreed to approve the categories presented in the policy. We also agreed to defer the discussion on what our policy was with regard to use of the categorization until the next meeting. The most fundamental issue, raised by Ruth, was whether to apply the categorization to individual members, and if so how. The categories, to be described in greater detail when we finish the policy are:

1. Visitors

2. Inquirers

3. New Members

4. Active Members

5. Less Active Members

Following a prayer led by Stephen, the meeting adjourned at 9:10pm.
