Summary: Interviewed our first intern candidate, reviewed the work of the Visioning Committee and dealt with other Deacons housekeeping tasks

Details

The meeting was called to order by Richard at 7:35 p.m.

Stephen opened with a prayer.

Richard began the meeting by making a motion to approve the minutes of the last meeting, which was done. He then suggested we start with a discussion about the candidate, prior to her visit, and follow her interview with the rest of the agenda.

2007/2008 Intern Recruitment.

Stephen began by pointing out that, contrary to our expectations, another candidate called about our position. After some discussion we agreed that Stephen should interview the other candidate and if she is acceptable the Deacons would meet on April 25th at 6:30 to interview her, thereafter choosing the best one. It was also agreed that we should stop the process. Stephen said he would tell School, Kristen and Patricia the position will be filled with the existing candidates. Since then Stephen has informed us of a third candidate.

Candidate interview: Stephen introduced the candidate to the Deacons. Richard spoke about the intern position and our In-Care policy. The candidate spoke about her prior internships working with college students, and her desire to intern in a wider church community. The deacons then asked her questions about; her preaching style: informal, her interest in youth programs: not her calling, her focus: helping create a spiritual community. Richard concluded by thanking the candidate and pointing out we have another candidate to interview before we can come to a decision.

Assignment of Duties:

Stephen mentioned his plans for a somewhat different Maundy Thursday service.

Julie agreed to bring the Bread and Juice. The service was well received and there was plenty of food.

Sunday Liturgist Assignments:

4/8: Ruth Dawkins 4/15: Mike Mahrle

4/22: T’Shala 4/29: David Cooke

Deacon’s Budget

Richard asked if we should change the budget, particularly put money in for subsequent years internships. After some discussion we agreed no changes were necessary for this year.

Skyland Church Visioning

Stephen and Ruth described the first meeting’s activities and conclusions. Richard raised a concern about the lack of a specific spiritual focus among any of the top directions for the Church. Larry agreed to raise the issue in the next Visioning meeting.

Member/Community Issues/Concerns

Stephen suggested one member who we might want to call. Richard agreed to call.

Other Business

Stephen requested vacation for the Sundays of 5/13 and 5/27, when he will be at the UCC Synod, and 6/18 through 6/30 when he will be on vacation. Stephen agreed to contact the other ministers and interns in the church to cover those Sundays, tentatively:

Pam 5/13, Pattricia 5/27, Kristen 6/24 and 6/18 TBD.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 1st at 7:30.

Following a prayer led by Stephen, the meeting adjourned at 9:30pm.
