When: Saturday, September 22, 2012 The members and friends of Skyland Church in the Santa Cruz Mountains host the Harvest Festival for the whole community every September. Imagine a day of meeting neighbors and friends, eating wonderful home cooked food, listening to fine music, and bidding on a favorite treasure. School has started, the garden is slowing down and the fog is gone. It's time to enjoy the fruits of our collective labor. Lunch - We Love to Eat: We serve a fine lunch with salads, a yummy BBQ, and lemonade. We also have wonderful jams, jellies, baked goods, and other homemade items for sale. Silent Auction: The sanctuary pews are crowded with baskets, with each basket having a theme of its own. Come bid on the ones that interest you. Local merchants donate many items which get included in the baskets. For example, Silver Mountain Vineyard donates wine for baskets that include picnic items and for baskets that include the makings of a fine dinner. Other donors include Triple O Ozone, services such as Summit and Wilson Vets, Summit Whole Body Fitness Club. Dr. Brent Lay, and, especially for you men, things like chain oil by the quart. Let there be firewood. Produce and plants: Fresh produce is still in abundance, and our members are eager to share their bounty with you. And don't forget the jams and jellies lovingly crafted by our members during the summer. Our collective green thumb has also been at work raising a wide variety of plants ready for fall planting. Children: Look for innovative new activities for the children, and of course great bargains at the toy booth. Also look at the Silent Auction for some amazing children's items. Books: The Skyland community is a well-read bunch, and our book selection shows it. Books are grouped by category and are priced to sell quickly. Come early for the best selection. Entertainment: Enjoy live music as you stroll around the Festival. Music adds so much to the ambiance of the day. Volunteer and Activity Signup Sheet: To sign up for Harvest Festival booths and activities, contact one of the Harvest Festival coordinators to enter your name on their signup sheet. History of the Harvest Festival: The first Harvest Festival was held in 1945 at the suggestion of Henry von der Mehden, after the rush of fruit season was over. Charles Eggleston, Robert Skillman and Robert Carpenter built the booths, which held a variety of home grown and cooked foods for sale. The Harvest Festival has been held annually ever since. |
